چکیده

Orbits in triaxial ellipsoidal potentials precess about either the major or minor axis of the ellipsoid. In standard perturbation theory it can be shown that a circular orbit will precess about the minor axis if its angular momentum vector lies in a region bounded by two great circles which pass through the intermediate axis and which are inclined with minimum separation iT from the minor axis, where iT = arctan ( (B−C)/(A− B) 1/2 and A, B and C are the axis ratios, A ≥ B ≥ C. We test the accuracy of this formula by performing orbit integrations to determine iS, the simulated turnover angle corresponding to iT . We reach two principal conclusions: (i) iS is usually greater than iT , by as much as 12 degrees even for moderate triaxialities, A/1.2 < B < C/0.8. This reduces the expected frequency of polar rings. (ii) iS is not a single, well-defined number but can vary by a few degrees depending upon the initial phase of the orbit. This means that there is a reasonable probability for capture of gas onto orbits which precess about both axes. Interactions can then lead to substantial loss of angular momentum and subsequent infall to the galactic centre.

On the Microlensing Optical Depth of the Galactic Bar

The microlensing probability (optical depth τ) toward the Galactic center carries information about the mass distribution of the Galactic bulge/bar, so can be used to constrain the very uncertain shape parameters of the Galactic bar. In this paper we study a family of bar models with tunable triaxiality, boxyness and radial profile to span the range of plausible density models of the Galactic b...

Precession of Isolated Neutron Stars II: Magnetic Fields and Type II Superconductivity

We consider the physics of free precession of a rotating neutron star with an oblique magnetic field. We show that if the magnetic stresses are large enough, then there is no possibility of steady rotation, and precession is inevitable. Even if the magnetic stresses are not strong enough to prevent steady rotation, we show that the minimum energy state is one in which the star precesses. Since ...

Arc Statistics in Triaxial Dark Matter Halos: Testing the Collisionless Cold Dark Matter Paradigm

Statistics of lensed arcs in clusters of galaxies serve as a powerful probe of both the non-sphericity and the inner slope of dark matter halos. We develop a semi-analytic method to compute the number of arcs in triaxial dark matter halos. This combines the lensing cross section from the Monte Carlo ray-tracing simulations, and the probability distribution function (PDF) of the axis ratios eval...

Orbital Structure of Triaxial Black - Hole Nuclei

Orbital motion in triaxial nuclei with central point masses, representing supermassive black holes, is investigated. The stellar density is assumed to follow a power law, ρ ∝ r −γ , with γ = 1 or γ = 2. At low energies the motion is essentially regular; the major families of orbits are the tubes and the pyramids. Pyramid orbits are similar to box orbits but have their major elongation parallel ...
